The Passage by Justin Cronin

Wow, this an adult vampire book with no teenage angst or sun-sparkles. That seems like it should be a win! Except…it’s not. See, these vampires here are the creation of a military experiment gone wrong. The result is a sort of zombie apocalypse where instead of creepy dead guys going around screaming for brains, we have creepy dead guys who go around glowing and draining the blood of the five humans left on the planet. (See, I promised, no sparkles…just radioactive glow-sticky-ness…because that’s not the same… AT ALL).

Only a few humans remain to fight for survival (and divvy up the remaining food and batteries and whatnot)… until later, OF COURSE, when a bunch more appear. And there is this girl, she’s both vampire and not, and she doesn’t age and can hear others’ thoughts, and hello…Stephenie Meyer. Except instead of venom, these post-apocalyptic vampire guys have a VIRUS and hearts of gold, as they don’t really want to kill people, they just aren’t in touch with their past selves or true natures or whatever, gag me…ahem.

And then bunches of other not so interesting stuff happened that dragged on far too long, like some guys who sacrificed their children to save themselves and some military installations were found that didn’t permit women and oh, hell, I don’t even know what all. Didn’t really love this, especially the drop-off, noncliffhanger of an ending that just tells me to read The Twelve to find out more. Unfortunately, I don’t care enough to do that and I’m still not entirely sure what the passage mentioned in the title is and I can’t believe I even finished this one except that I paid for it on my Kindle and therefore felt I had to. And bad books make me all ranty and run-onny and out of breath and…Blah.
